A milestone for Steve!

It’s astonishing but true: it is 43 years to the very day since our Company Secretary Steve Green (pictured) joined Charles Ransford & Son Ltd. Steve came to work here in the accounts office but was very soon in charge of the whole accounts function and it was from that vantage point that he realised  things were not going well for the business as it then was.Steve was instrumental in bringing about the deal which saw the mill purchased by the late Mr Alan Evans and his brother Brian to save it from bankruptcy in 1978. The purchase price was just £100 but along with the mill came £1.5 million of debts to the bank and trade creditors – a small fortune in those days – every penny of which was paid off over the following 5 years.

In buying the mill Alan and Brian saved scores of jobs in their home town of Bishop’s Castle and established the financial conditions for the creation of the advanced sawmilling operation we have today. Indeed, the mill is recognised as one of the best run businesses of its kind in the UK. Steve has been and continues to be a key contributor to our success and we are all hugely grateful for his long and faithful service.
