The Northern Racing
College
The Northern Racing College is the Northern centre for excellence for the
racing industry and just one of Ransfords many customers within the racing
industry.
Opened in 1984 the College's aim has always been to provide high quality
training for young people who want to work within the racing industry which
leads to the achievement of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ's)
together with practical work experience in racing yards.
Approximately 100 students complete their 12 week residential NVQ level 1
Foundation Course each year. This is the starting point for students with
no previous experience of working with horses and for those with some equine
but limited racing experience.
For those students who have no desire to jump on board and ride a racehorse,
they offer a non-riding option and also the opportunity to specialise in
thoroughbred breeding. The College is quite unique and the learning
experience upon which their students embark is one of great enjoyment,
interest and exhilaration.

You don't have to live in the North either! Students are from all over
the country and abroad and the College's reputation for excellence is
recognised throughout the racing industry.
The College accepts people with various levels of experience and ability and
provides outstanding support and guidance for all their students, both at
the College and in the work place. Their team of professional and
occupationally competent staff will provide the best start for those wishing
to succeed in the racing industry, currently among the top ten employers in
the UK.

Facilities include a 60m x 40m indoor arena, a Ransfords woodfibre
all-weather gallop, a large floodlit outdoor arena, a novice cross country
course and schooling hurdles and fences. During a recent inspection the
Adult Learning Inspectorate awarded the College a Grade 1 Outstanding Award
- something which the College is justifiably proud of.
The UK Racing Industry is enjoying substantial growth with over 17,000
horses in training and over 650 licensed racehorse training yards.

With over 5 million people visiting British racecourses each year and a
large television audience, horseracing is the nation's second spectator
sport. For over 100,000 people with a wide variety of skills, it is an
industry in which they can earn their living and race days are the
culmination of years of preparation and co-operation between key
professionals. It is this heady mixture of sport and industry devoted to
one of the noblest animals, the thoroughbred, that gives racing its appeal.
